Hunger—and our response to it—looks different in the summertime. We can’t do it without you! Please give a financial gift today to the ‘I Love My Lunch Box!’ summer hunger appeal!
Why give? Here at The Open Door we witness summer hunger first hand in children—kids are in our gardens, at our Pantries, and on the Mobile Lunch Box. The Open Door works to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months, when they do not have access to lunch or breakfast at school. But, this does not come without additional expenses to the organization when need is higher and donations—both food and funds—are typically lower.
How do we respond to summer hunger? Three innovative approaches:
• The Mobile Lunch Box—a mobile cafeteria rolls into low income neighborhoods with healthy bagged lunches, take home bags of healthy food, and enrichment activities for school-aged children
• Garden To Table—a sustainable approach to eliminating hunger where clients learn and grow together in adoptable community garden plots
• Lunch Box food at the Pantries—additional healthy and kid-friendly food for families with children
