How do I get food from the Pantry?

No one should feel hunger or worry about putting food on their table. We have many options to help you get food – here’s how to start:

  1. Call (651) 686-0787 to set up an appointment. We help a lot of people, so we ask that you sign up for a specific day and time to get food from the Pantry.
  2. Come to your first appointment. When you come for your first appointment, a volunteer will meet with you to ask a few simple questions and explain how the Pantry works. We will not share your information with anyone.
  3. Pick out your own food – just like a regular grocery store. One of our friendly volunteers will guide you around as you choose your food. The Pantry looks like a regular grocery store, just smaller. The foods we have can change, but we try to have milk, eggs, dairy, meat, fish, breads, fruits, vegetables, canned food, and packaged food. We also have a Curbside service option available.
  4. Learn about the other ways The Open Door can help. Our Pantry isn’t the only way you can get fresh food from us. Ask about our Drive-Thru appointments, our Mobile Food locations, our summertime Mobile Lunchbox program, or our Emergency To-Go Bags. We can also help you get connected with other community agencies or assistance.

The volunteers and staff of The Open Door promise you a dignified and respectful experience. Give us a call today at (651) 686-0787.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If your question isn’t answered below, please feel free to call us or send us a message.

Am I eligible to get food from the Pantry?
If you need food, you can get food from The Open Door. We help everyone. You don’t need to show proof of income or citizenship. Federal food bank policies do require us to ask our clients their annual income – however, nobody is ever turned away based on income. Due to high demand, we currently reserve shopping appointments in the Pantry for Dakota County residents.
What should I bring?
It’s helpful if you bring a picture ID or mail with your address. This makes your first visit faster. But if you don’t have these, you can still get food. If you can, please bring your own bags for your food.
What should I expect at my appointment?
One of our friendly volunteers will guide you around as you choose your food. The Pantry looks like a regular grocery store, just smaller. The foods we have can change, but we try to have milk, eggs, dairy, meat, fish, breads, fruits, vegetables, canned food, and packaged food.

We also have a Curbside service option available. With Curbside, you make a shopping list, and we’ll have your food ready when you arrive. If you’d like to use Curbside service let us know when you call to set up your appointment, and fill this form out prior to coming.

How often can I get food?
Appointments at our Pantry may be made once a month. During busy times, there may be two months between Pantry appointments. We know that can be a long time to wait between appointments, so we have other programs available to help out!

  • Get a pre-packed box of food up to twice a month with our fast and easy Drive-Thru appointments.
  • Drop by the Pantry during our open hours to get a To-Go Bag. No appointment needed. Just ask at the front desk.
  • Check out our Mobile Food locations – every month we bring a smaller version of our Pantry to places across Dakota County.
  • Do you have children? Our Mobile Lunchbox program gives kids healthy lunch options during the summer months.
What if I don’t speak English?
The Open Door has a language translation service that allows us to communicate with our clients in any language. Let us know what language you need, and
we’ll make it happen.
